I knew the minute I even thought about starting a Korean vegan beauty brand that we would need to get PETA certified. When I went vegan several years ago, seeing the "PETA Approved" sticker on a brand was how I knew what to buy. Obviously, I didn't see the bunny label on any K-beauty products back in the day (there are now quite a few!), which is one of the main reasons I decided to start KVBeauty.

Now, I've been hollering far and wide that Korean Vegan Beauty is a vegan-owned, woman-founded, vegan and cruelty-free K-beauty brand. That's a huge part of the origin story of KVBeauty. We built a 7,000+ social media community on this messaging, and I know many of you are reading this blog post because you are a part of that community. But getting certified by one of the most trusted vegan institutions on the planet?
Yeah, that's in a league of its own.
I don't know what I was thinking when we originally contacted PETA expressing our intention to get certified. Maybe I was naive to think, "Well, they should just take my word for it!" Strike that. I was definitely naive to think that. I didn't realize that the REASON PETA certification is so valuable is because it's so damn hard to get!!
It took us almost three months to acquire the certification and several emails back and forth with PETA. Without going into the nitty gritty, here are just some of the things we needed to do to prove to PETA that we were worth the little bunny sticker:
- Fill out multiple application forms.
- Draft up multiple versions of manufacturing agreements.
- Draft up multiple versions of raw supplier agreements.
- Draft up letter agreement with manufacturer and all suppliers.
- Contact manufacturer and all suppliers for every single ingredient.
- Procure signatures from every single supplier on written agreements.
In sum, there is a giant waterfall of parties, starting from KVBeauty all the way down to each individual supplier who makes and provides us with each and every ingredient that goes into any of our products. We had to contact every single one of them to obtain their written confirmation that:
- their ingredient is not an animal product, and
- is not tested on animals.
In addition to that, we had to obtain their written and signed commitment that no ingredients they ever provide in the future will contain animal products or be tested on animals.
This is not easy even with US-based companies. But, Korean Vegan Beauty is a Korean beauty brand. Our products are all manufactured in South Korea. Our ingredients are all sourced from South Korea. We thus spent weeks and weeks and weeks going back and forth between all the parties, just to hurdle the cultural and language barriers that usually don't get in the way of most companies seeking certification.
So, maybe you can understand why I nearly wet my pants when we got the email from PETA congratulating us on FINALLY getting PETA CERTIFIED!!!
I can now say with confidence that it's not just my intention that makes Korean Vegan Beauty a fully vegan, cruelty-free K-beauty brand. This statement is now third party verified by one of the oldest vegan watchdogs on the planet.
And we are so very proud.
