My friend, Sandy, is staying with me right now. Sandy and I are both firmly a product of GenX. As such, we are both enjoying the rollercoaster that is known as "perimenopause," aka "peri."
For those who have yet to have the pleasure--it's not. You wake up feeling unrested (probably because you spent half the night soaking in your own sweat--hot flashes anyone?). You spend half the day coasting through a persistent brain fog while trying to fight off the urge to eat everything in sight. Meanwhile, everyone--your mom, your bestie, your doctor, and your Instagram feed--is telling you that you need to get at least 20 minutes of heavy lifting in per day, which is a cruel sort of irony, isn't it? When you've never been so tired in your entire living life.
That's just how you feel. What about how it looks?
- Nearly a third of your dermal collagen is lost during the first five years of this delightful era in your life.
- Skin looks flatter and those creases start to settle, in for life.
- Adult acne can actually get worse for some (and you thought those chin pimples were gone for good--think again!).
- Like all those diet tricks that won't budge the scale, products you've depended on for years no longer seem to do the trick or, even worse, they actually hurt and cause redness or rosacea.
Can K-Beauty philosophy provide an answer to perimenopausal symptoms?
The reason I'm even thinking about this is because of a review KV Beauty's Vegan Collagen Cream just received:
"This is by far the best moisturizer I’ve ever used. Perimenopause has put my skin through the proverbial wringer, so this product was heaven sent. It absorbs well and is so smooth to apply."
It got me wondering--is there something specific to K-beauty--and Korean Vegan Beauty in particular--that makes our products well suited for those going through this time in their lives? It turns out:
Yes, there is!
- Gentle Healing. K-Beauty isn't really about a 12-step regimen that keeps you from going "raisin." It's about gentle healing. In lieu of western-style anti-aging ingredients (like acids and retinoids), K-beauty looks to natural remedies that can be particularly soothing to a thinning and reactive skin barrier.
- Low Irritation. Peri tends to make your skin more susceptible to inflammation and irritation (acne, redness, etc.). Lower-pH cleansers and formulas that are balanced with ingredients designed to buffer more robust cleansing agents can help to lower the risk of a breakout or rosacea.
- MIT-Free Shampoo. Methylisothiazolinone is one of the most significant scalp allergens contained in many commercial shampoos and reactivity to this particular one tends to increase during peri. We created our KV Beauty Smoothing Shampoo to be MIT-free, to guard against a higher risk of allergen reactivity.
-
Ceramide Support. Most Western skin creams give lip service to ceramides with only one or two ceramide products in their ingredient line up. Ceramides act as a glue between skin cells, so when they decline (which they absolutely do during peri), water escapes your skin faster, leaving your skin feeling drier, thinner, and more reactive. Our skin cream offers not one, not two, but five ceramide products that work together to leave your skin feeling hydrated and, well, "heaven sent"!
So, I guess there are few reasons K-Beauty might excel at making your hair and skin feel a little bit less like it's "going through the wringer," and more like what you're used to!
