Pumpkin spice is everywhere.
Is there a more accurate harbinger of cooler weather??
I kid!!
But truly, it is getting to be cooler, and both my skin and hair can tell. So, for this week's Beauty Journal, I thought I'd provide a few easy to implement tips for taking care of your hair as temperatures dip.
Leave In Conditioner.
Look, we are WORKING on a conditioner to pair with our shampoo, but in the meantime, I highly recommend you look into a leave in conditioner. I don't wash my hair every day, but when I do, I follow it up with a leave in conditioner that prevents breakage and helps lock in the moisture. It also helps with detangling my hair!
Air Drying Prevents Excessive Drying.
I've always preferred air drying my hair, but this is particularly true for when the colder weather makes things extra dry. I know, I know, the cold makes your hair cold. But, trust me, letting it dry naturally will forestall damage to your gorgeous mane!
Avoid Excessively Cold Air!
I know, I just said air dry your hair, but it's important not to do so in freezing weather! That cold can also do damage to your hair! Like, it'll freeze and then break your hair! My tip would be to try taking showers or washing your hair at night. Another idea would be to use no-rinse shampoos! And when you do go out to brave the cold, make sure to wrap that hair in a hat or scarf!
Vitamin D Supplements Promote Growth.
So, I've been taking a vitamin D supp since forever—long before I went vegan (lest people think a deficiency is linked to that). But even if you're generally Vitamin D sufficient, things can change in the winter months, when you're spending far less time outdoors and under direct sunlight. Vitamin D, in turn, promotes healthy hair growth, and as such, its important you supplement your diet accordingly.
Style Your Hair with Protection in Mind.
So, I generally run with a braid, mostly to avoid flyaways distracting me while jogging. But it also turns out that braiding your hair (or putting it in a bun or twisting it up) helps shield hair strands from damage, while also preventing tangling and breakage. Experiment with a style you enjoy—I love a classic French twist for nights out and a high bun for when I'm in the kitchen!
I hope you found these five tips for taking care of your hair in colder weather useful!!
